Back to the Books: The Raw Reality of Balancing Full-Time Work and My Return to Online Education at NCU

If you had told me a few years ago that I would be sitting in front of a laptop screen, logging into virtual classrooms, and studying for exams again, I probably would have laughed. I left school exactly 20 years ago. When you step away from formal education for two full decades, you build a massive, comfortable routine around your life. The mere thought of disrupting that comfort zone to go back to school can feel completely terrifying.

But recently, I realized that growth requires discomfort. I decided to take a major leap of faith and enroll in the Supervisory Management Certificate Course through Northern Caribbean University (NCU), all while continuing to maintain my demanding, full-time work commitments.
Expectations vs. The Intensive Reality of Live Classes at NCU
To be completely honest, I had absolutely no idea what I was truly getting myself into! When I first signed up for this professional development course, I foolishly figured an online certificate program would be a straightforward, surface-level review of basic management ideas—something I could easily breeze through passively. I was completely wrong.
This program through NCU Digital Education is incredibly intensive, demanding, and deeply in-depth. We have live online classes for 3 hours every single week with a real university teacher.
The real test of my dedication comes every single week when class time hits. My live classes start at 6:00 PM, but I don’t leave work until 7:00 PM. This means I have to log into a high-level university lecture right from my workplace while winding down my day. Then, right in the middle of class at 7:00 PM, I have to pack up, leave my workplace, and manage my commute home—all while staying locked into the lecture, listening to my instructor, and keeping up with the material.
Balancing this level of academic rigor and chaotic timing with a demanding full-time job is one of the heaviest mental loads I have ever carried. It means:
  • Juggling the end of a long, grueling shift at work with the high-energy start of a 3-hour live lecture.
  • Forcing my brain to stay completely focused and absorb complex management concepts on a screen while transitioning from work to my commute home.
  • Sacrificing my evenings and free time to dive deep into advanced leadership strategies, organizational psychology, and real-world problem-solving structures to ensure I am keeping up with the university curriculum.
The Power of Proving It to Yourself
As difficult as this balancing act is, it has also been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Every time I complete a 3-hour session under these intense conditions, I am proving something powerful to myself. Returning to school after 20 years at an institution like Northern Caribbean University is a living reminder that it is never too late to reinvent yourself, sharpen your skills, and level up your career.
Your mind is a muscle, and it doesn't care how long it has been out of the game—it only cares that you start training it again. If you are currently sitting on a dream, delaying an application, or telling yourself you are "too old" or "too busy" to go back to school, take the leap. It will be much harder than you think, but I promise you, you are far more capable than you realize!
